Our Story
Four generations. One home.
This is not a heritage attraction. This is where our family has lived, cooked, laughed and gathered for over sixty years.
Every kampung has a story. Ours is still being written.
When Singapore was still a patchwork of villages, our family settled on Pulau Ubin. The island was alive then — with rubber tappers, granite quarry workers, and families who built their lives close to the land and close to each other.
Our kampung home was built by our grandparents. Timber walls, a zinc roof, a well in the yard and a kitchen that always smelled of something cooking. It was not grand. It was home.
As Singapore modernised and most families moved to the mainland, we stayed. Not because we had to — because we chose to. Because some things are worth holding on to.
Tok and Nenek built this place.
Our grandparents — Tok and Nenek — arrived on Pulau Ubin as young people. They built the kampung house with their own hands, raised their children here, and grew a garden that still produces fruit today.
Life was communal. Neighbours shared meals, helped each other with harvests, and gathered in the evenings under the trees. The kampung was not just a place to live — it was a way of living.
Our mother grew up running barefoot through this garden.
For our mother's generation, the kampung was the whole world. School was a bumboat ride away. Weekends meant climbing rambutan trees, catching fish in the streams, and helping Nenek pound spices in the stone mortar that still sits in our kitchen.
As Singapore's new towns rose on the mainland, friends and cousins moved away one by one. The island grew quieter. But our family stayed, and the kampung remained.
Singapore changed. Our kampung remained.
By the time our generation came of age, Pulau Ubin had become something rare — a living piece of the Singapore that most people only read about in history books. The kampung house, the fruit trees, the stone well, the old kitchen — all still here.
We began to understand what we had. Not just a house, but a responsibility. To keep this place alive. To share it. To let others experience what kampung life truly felt like.
We invite your team to experience it.
Balik Kampung SG was born from a simple idea: that the things our kampung gave us — connection, simplicity, shared purpose, the joy of cooking and eating together — are exactly what modern teams are missing.
We are not a venue. We are a family. When your team visits, you are guests in our home. Our family members are present. Our stories are real. Our kitchen is open.
This is our home. Welcome to kampung.
Come back to what matters. Come back to the people, the place, and the kind of connection that no boardroom can create.
